Batumi Mosque (Orta Jame)
ბათუმის მეჩეთი
Batumi's only active mosque, a 19th-century Ottoman-style building with a golden dome.
Known locally as Orta Jame, the 'middle mosque', this is the only active mosque in Batumi and the city's main Muslim centre. It was commissioned in 1866 by the family of the Adjarian nobleman Aslan Beg Khimshiashvili. A minaret was added in 1946. In Soviet times it was closed and used as a military warehouse, and it reopened for worship in 1995.
The building follows late Ottoman provincial style. It has a white minaret, a gilded dome, two tiers of windows and a wooden roof on four columns. The ceiling, dome and railings are painted in bright colours.

Good to know
- It is a working mosque with five daily prayers. On Fridays, worshippers often pray in the surrounding streets because space is limited.
