Batumi Boulevard Colonnade
კოლონადები
Roman-style colonnade from the 1930s, built as the grand entrance to Batumi Boulevard.
The Colonnade is a Roman-style row of columns on Batumi Boulevard and a listed historical monument. It was built as the main entrance to the boulevard and once marked the start of the seashore, although the coastline has since moved back.
The idea came in 1930 from a local doctor, Ivane Mchedlidze, who met Maxim Gorky at a medical conference in Italy. The city council approved the plan, and construction began in 1934 under chief architect Pavle Nadareishvili, with architect Bogdan Kirakosyan supervising the work.
