Europe Square

Europe Square is one of the liveliest spots in Old Batumi. It is lined with 19th-century buildings that European architects designed for wealthy residents. The Baku–Batumi railway, completed in 1883, ended a few streets away, at the old station on Chavchavadze Street. It sits next to the former Mariinski Prospect, a street known for its classical buildings.

On one side, a statue of Medea holding the Golden Fleece recalls the Argonaut myth set in ancient Colchis. The city's New Year tree goes up here every year, and the square hosts festivals and international concerts.

Good to know

  • The fountain in the middle of the square is popular with children on hot summer days.
  • The facades are best seen lit up at night.
  • The Astronomical Clock is at the nearby corner of M. Abashidze and K. Gamsakhurdia streets.
