Europe Square
ევროპის მოედანი
Old Batumi's central square, with the Medea statue, a fountain and 19th-century facades.
Europe Square is one of the liveliest spots in Old Batumi. It is lined with 19th-century buildings that European architects designed for wealthy residents. In 1893 it was the last stop of the Baku–Batumi railway route. It sits next to the former Mariinski Prospect, a street known for its classical buildings.
On one side, a statue of Medea holding the Golden Fleece recalls the Argonaut myth set in ancient Colchis. The city's New Year tree goes up here every year, and the square hosts festivals and international concerts.
