Selim Khimshiashvili

სელიმ ხიმშიაშვილის

A statue of Selim Khimshiashvili, the Georgian beylerbey of Adjara, was unveiled in Batumi in 2015.

The statue commemorates Selim Khimshiashvili (1755–1815), a Georgian nobleman who ruled Adjara as beylerbey under Ottoman suzerainty with considerable autonomy. He seized control of the Pashalik of Akhaltsikhe in 1802 and was executed on 3 June 1815 on the order of the sultan. He is remembered as a hero in Adjara: his native village of Nigazeuli hosts a museum in his name, and a street in Batumi bears it as well.
